Paul Yang, a 32-year-old fourth-grade teacher from Leonia, NJ, was arrested on December 3, 2025, and charged with second-degree sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Prosecutors allege the incident occurred on October 22, 2025, inside his classroom at Paterson Public School No. 25 during school hours, with another student present.
According to charging documents, Yang separated two students using "test blinders." He sent one child to the front of the room and brought the 9-year-old victim to the back, claiming a "treasure box" contained special Korean lollipops (lemon and grape flavors). He blindfolded the girl with silk fabric to "guess the flavor," but the blindfold slipped. She allegedly saw him pull down his pants and rub a grape lollipop against his genitals before offering it to her; she refused. The girl acted nervous but tried to appear normal. Yang then dismissed both students. Upon returning to their regular class, one became "inconsolable," prompting a report.
The investigation began after a tip to the Division of Child Protection and Permanency. Yang, employed by the Paterson School District since 2021, was immediately placed on leave and fired the day after his arrest. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
